We lost a legend on Friday May 27, 2011 when influential poet, musician, and author Gil Scott-Heron passed. The roots of modern jazz, soul, hip-hop, and poetry can be traced back to his early works. The way rappers rhyme and the way musicians frame phrases are among the products of the revolution he posed to the world. Moreover, in recent years as hip-hop artists began to sample his work, GSH did not just sit back and watch. Instead on his 2010 release, I’m Here Now, he sampled Kanye West in a move that spoke to the fact that his creativity never ended. It continued all the way up until the day he had to stop. Collectively, we thank Gil Scott-Heron for his influence and creativity. Rest in Power.
